The Boundary

The extension of a countryside home and walled garden swimming pool.

Location: South Oxfordshire
Project type: Extension/outdoor pool
Client type: Homeowner
Status: Completed 2024
Area: 60sqm (extension) + 150sqm (pool)

This project rethinks a series of outdated conservatories and an underused 1980s indoor pool at a large countryside home, replacing them with a more coherent, landscape-led arrangement. A new garden room forms a calm transition between house and garden, while the existing pool has been reimagined as part of a wider walled garden setting.

The former indoor pool has been converted into an outdoor swimming pool, opening the garden and shifting the focus from building to landscape. A new pool house pavilion provides changing facilities and informal seating.

The surrounding landscape has been reworked to form a more enclosed and intimate garden, with planting and walls defining a series of connected outdoor rooms. The pool is now heated via an air-source heat pump, significantly improving efficiency and reducing running costs compared to the original system.
